Mixed-Use Market and Residential Development, Brussels, Belgium

Discipline:
SOMA is a mixed use market for Abattoir SA-NV that is located in the immigrant neighborhood of Anderlecht, Belgium. The site is part of a large block development, returning the currently open site of the original market building to a defined urban condition or “thick block” system. The building was developed using a regular permanent platonic panel system capable of housing a variety of programmatic needs as the future occupation may vary. The market - now called 'Foodmet' - has been officially opened beginning of June 2015 and will predominantly sell meat from a slaughter house on site, one of the only remaining urban slaughter houses in Europe. The building also houses retail, fruit and vegetable market, a restaurant and large urban farm.

On the Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2016, along the main dock of the Arsenale, ORG has proposed a physical experience of the architecture: a model and photos of the actual market were hosted under as set of full scale concrete porticoes, temporarily linking Anderlecht with the Venetian lagoon. The project was selected for the BSA-awards and for the FEBE concrete Elements Awards.
