Police Station for the City of Brakel, Belgium

Discipline:
The City of Brakel held an open competition for the design of a police station. ORG’s winning proposal places a very bent rectangular plan, at a strategic location. This project considers the practical security, light and accessibility issues and strategically implements a radical façade system of mega bricks to deliver monumental power and modern simplicity. The Atlantes for the Brakel Police Station are thirteen gargantuan statues, measuring nearly 12 ft. (3.6m).They stand effortlessly in the place of each column, giving a stature to the facility akin to the ‘Atlantes’ of Renaissance architectural vocabulary or the ‘Caryatids’ of Ancient Greece. At the police station, the figures express a distinctly androgynous being, both supporting the weight of the facility above and projecting an institutional empathy of the officers to the town public.

Construction was finished in the beginning of 2016.
