The new role of the town planner is very similar to that of the curator of an art exhibition or a cultural exhibition. The curator indeed establishes a conceptual framework. It determines how the theme (often predefined) is expressed in the exhibition. However, he does not construct this interpretation on the basis of his own work, but through a carefully considered choice of suitable artists.

It is in the organization of the exhibition, the installation of the works, and the course of the visit that the curator tries to disseminate his message in a coherent manner. The town planner-curator also determines the spatial conceptual framework. But here he no longer acts as an architect himself, but selects architects or gives advice in selection procedures.

Often, the town planner-curator receives the mission of constructing the public space, the landscape framework in which the buildings will find their place.
